I set out to re-torque the head bolts on Rusty today and got to the corner where the coolant leaked out when I started him and discovered that the head bolt was broken. It seemed to me that the torque was very uneven on the ten bolts I loosened before re-torquing them. My Original Old Guy friend in Nashville — who has been building engines and specializing in these GM straight-sixes for fifty years — wants me to go after the remainder of the bolt with a lefthanded drill bit and a fluted bolt extractor. Amazon-dot-com, here I come...
That’s the head of a head bolt almost completely hidden by sludge.
And, OOPS!
